Meet our expert conservators from some of the UK’s leading museums and heritage organisations — professionals who work behind the scenes to protect and preserve historic objects, artworks, and buildings so they can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Alex Owen

Senior Conservator at the British Museum

Alex uses a mix of traditional craft skills, scientific analysis, and community engagement to ensure that the objects and artefacts at the Museum are being cared for properly. Sometimes this means making sure that artefacts are robust enough to go on display, sometimes it means working with scientists or community members to better understand how artefacts were made or used. In this creative and multi-disciplinary role, Alex has been lucky enough to work with everything from Ancient Egyptian coffins, through Japanese Buddhist sculptures and North American Totem Poles, to European long-case clocks. Alex is currently studying for an MSc to be able to better look after plastic containing artefacts.
